Freshwater pearls are typically found in lakes and rivers in China, Japan & The United States. In recent years, the quality of Freshwater pearls has drastically improved and has resulted in beautiful pearls that are cleaner, rounder and more lustrous. Due to their mass production, freshwater pearls are also popular for their affordable price point.
Although freshwater pearls are the most commonly produced pearls, their unique shapes and wide range of colours combined with their attractive prices and charming character, have made them a favourite among jewellery designers and customer.
The characteristics of our pearls offered at Freshwater Pearl Designs range in shape from baroque to round with sizes from 8mm to 18mm. Most freshwater pearls grow in varied shapes, including baroque, potato shaped, rice shaped, button shaped, coin shaped, drop pearls, near-round and round pearls with distinctive surface texture and warmth in their lustre.
Because they offer a wider diversity of colours, shapes and sizes than any other type of pearl, freshwater pearls are often used in fanciful designer jewellery. In addition to the traditional white body colour, these pearls come in a rainbow of natural pastel colours such as lavender, pink, and every shade in between.

Caring For Your Freshwater Pearl Designs Jewellery
A lot of our jewellery is made from brass, and may include other base alloys such as steel, zinc and copper. These pieces also incorporate a wide range of materials including glass, resins, acetate, semi-precious stones, beads and enamel work.
- Store your jewellery in a cool, dry place.
- Avoid pulling or catching components.
- Freshwater Pearl Designs recommends that you remove your jewellery before showering, sleeping, intense exercise or swimming—chemicals found in chlorinated water, as well as the salt in sea water and sweat will encourage tarnishing.
- Please avoid exposing your freshwater pearl jewellery directly to perfumes, soap, abrasive chemicals, hair spray and cosmetics. It’s best to wait until perfumes and cosmetics are completely dry before putting your jewellery on.
- Ensure your jewellery is never exposed to extreme heat or prolonged contact with water—this can affect the integrity of your pieces and cause stones to come loose.
- Clean metal and stones using a damp, non-abrasive cloth.
- Take special care around settings, especially those containing claws to avoid catching or damaging your jewellery.
- If you have a strand of freshwater pearls and that are really dirty, we suggest taking them to a jeweller to be cleaned.
